Western

It's that time of year again for the Regional Meeting/Conference and get togethers.  Chris Allgyer and Mountain Empire CC have volunteered to host the Western Regional members at Big Stone Gap, VA on Friday afternoon October 23.  Check-in and Registration will begin at 12:00; lunch will be served at 12:30, and a short general meeting will begin at 1:00.

We have invited Professors Jennifer Wilson and Michael Potter from The University of Virginia's College at Wise to do a presentation on 2 new Math Ed classes that they recently developed and now require for their education students. The courses were designed to strengthen critical thinking and problem solving skills, particularly for middle school education majors:

The Mathematical Preparation of K-6 Pre-service Teachers - What Do They Really Need to Know?

This session will focus on the development, implementation and on-going evolution of MTH 3010: Euclidean Geometry and MTH 3020: Problem Solving which are application oriented courses designed as core-requirements for pre-service teachers seeking endorsement at the K-6 level at the University of Virginia's College at Wise.  Topics of discussion will include the research foundation for the courses, the format of the courses, and the impact the courses have had on the mathematical preparation of pre-service teachers.

Depending on interests, we will then follow up with some discussion of any relevant issues or topics such as developmental courses, transfer courses or any other interests.  We expect to finish by 3:00 pm.

There is no cost for the meeting or lunch; VMATYC pays for all the meeting expenses (except for individual transportation costs).  Please respond to Harriette Roadman, hroadman@nr.edu, by October 15, and indicate your intention of attending so we can have a count of the number of participants (and lunches) to plan for.  If you don't tell reserve a slot, you may not get anything to eat!
