 Meeting in conjunction with

Virginia Mathematical Association of Two-Year Colleges

April 4 – 5, 2008

Conference Theme – Meet You in the Middle

Piedmont Virginia Community College

Charlottesville, Virginia

Registration and social time (with refreshments) will begin at 1:00 p.m. on Friday, April 4th, in Room 228, the North Mall Meeting Room (PVCC), 501 College Drive, Charlottesville, VA 22902.  A map and directions are enclosed.  There is plenty of parking at PVCC.  Parking directions, click here.  All conference activities will be held at PVCC, except for the Friday night banquet and speaker.

Concurrent sessions will be held from 2:00 p.m. until 5:10 p.m. at PVCC, followed by the banquet at the Comfort Inn, Monticello at 6:30 p.m.  After dinner, Dr. Susan Wood, VCCS Assistant Vice Chancellor for Institutional Effectiveness, will be our keynote speaker.  Her talk is entitled: Mathematical Mystery Tour: Excellence in the Middle. Dr. Wood received her Doctorate in Mathematics Education from The University of Virginia.  She was a charter member of the mathematics faculty at JSRCC and has been actively involved in professional mathematics organizations at the local, state, national, and international levels.  More recently she has become an active proponent of teacher education at the community college level and is currently the president of the National Association of Community College Teacher Education Programs (NACCTEP).

On Saturday morning, a complementary continental breakfast will be available at the Comfort Inn, followed by the VMATYC business meeting at PVCC at 8:30 a.m.  After concurrent sessions from 9:50 until 1:00 p.m., the conference will conclude with an optional boxed lunch ($6.95) and special door prizes.  On the registration form you are offered several lunch choices:  Smoked Turkey, Baked Ham, Roast Beef, or Veggie with either potato salad or cole slaw.  You may choose to eat lunch with colleagues at the college or take it with you to enjoy on your trip home.  For those who would like to extend their stay in the Charlottesville area, a list of attractions and current events will be provided at the conference.

The conference hotel is the Comfort Inn, Monticello, a beautiful facility located near Interstate 64.  When calling the hotel to make your reservation (434-977-3300), state that you are with the VMATYC Conference and state the name of your college.  You will also need to guarantee your reservation with a credit card.  The conference rates are $87.00 for Thursday night, $119.95 each for Friday and Saturday nights (excluding tax).  There is a seven (7) day cancellation policy in effect.  Each guest who does not cancel by Thursday, March 27th, will be charged the full amount.  Since we are competing with spring soft ball tournament season, please make your reservation soon.

The VMATYC Conference will again serve as the Mathematics and Computer Science Peer Group Meeting, which is a professional development initiative of the Virginia Community College System (VCCS).  The VCCS reimburses VMATYC for a portion of the conference expenses for VCCS faculty only.  (If you are not sure whether your college is one of the twenty-three colleges in the system, please see the list of VCCS Colleges at http://www.vccs.edu/colleges/vccswebs.htm.)   For example, the VCCS pays half of the room cost, plus tax, for Friday night for VCCS faculty, full-time and adjunct.  If you are a VCCS faculty member rooming with another VCCS faculty member, the whole cost of the room will be paid, provided you BOTH complete the paperwork to formally check into the room.  If you are traveling at least 200 miles to the conference and wish to arrive on Thursday evening, half of your room on Thursday night will also be covered.  Unfortunately, VMATYC does not have funds to offer this benefit to our members who are not VCCS faculty.  This doesn’t mean we value you any less; we just don’t get reimbursed for you.  When you arrive at the registration table, you will be asked to sign in on either the “VCCS sheet” or the “non-VCCS sheet.”

Even if you cannot attend this year’s conference, please take this opportunity to renew your VMATYC membership on the enclosed application.
